Inter-cropping of maize and soybean with legowo planting system

Maize cultivation at farmer level remains poor due to limited agriculture field and low productivity. Along with technological innovations, intercropping attracts lots of attention of agricultural practitioners. One of intercropping is maize and soy bean under planting system if ‘legowo. Intercropping of maize and soy bean is aimed to solve competition of land use on monoculture planting. Maize price is relatively higher and has better comparative advantages compare to soy bean, therefore maize varieties used in intercropping needs to have at least the same productivity as in monoculture.

Application of maize and soy bean intercropping uses 2:1 legowo planting system, to which two rows of maize are closely planted (distance between rows) and thus space of one row is created every two rows of maize and this one row can be used for soy bean. Maize productivity under legowo is higher than single row planting system due to border crop effect.

Empty space created every two rows can also be used for two rows of soy bean without reducing maize productivity. In this way, it increases index of land use and farmers’ income. Studies showed soy bean under intercropping with maize yielded 50% higher than in monoculture.  This intercropping also ameliorates naturally the soil by nitrogen fixation of soy bean roots.

Development Area

Intercropping of maize and soy bean with legowo planting system is suitable for rice field and dry land with sufficient soil fertility and water source. It is connected with improvement of maize harvest index, beside yield and productivity.

Cultivation

Maize planting

  1. Using hybrid variety with erect leave such as Bima-2, Bima-4, Pioner-21, Bisi-16 etc. Seed requirement is 15 – 17 kg per ha.
  2. Making sure seed germination is higher than 90% and good vigor.
  3. Land is well tillage.
  4. Maize is planted for one seed per row under legowo/double row and covered with one handheld of organic fertilizer
  5. Planting distances for legowo are (100-50) cm x 20 cm or (110-40) cm x 20 cm (refer to the picture)
  6. Fertilizer dosages:
    1. Rice field using 350 kg Urea + 300 kg phonska or other compound fertilizer. Twice application of fertilizer, with first application of 100 kg urea + 300 kg phonska or other compound fertilizer per hectare at seven to ten days after planting. Second application is given at 35 – 45 days after planting with 250 kg of urea per hectare. Fertilizer is applied by filling it in 10cm depth hole next to the plant and covers it with soil afterward.
    2. Dry land using 325 kg Urea + 300 kg phonska or other compound fertilizer. Twice application of fertilizer, with first application of 100 kg urea + 300 kg phonska or other compound fertilizer per hectare at seven to ten days after planting. Second application is given at 35 – 45 days after planting with 20 kg urea + 100 kg phonska per hectare. Fertilizer is applied by filling it in 10cm depth hole next to the plant and covers it with soil afterward.
  7. Weeding and soil piling is done with hoe
  8. Harvest when husk cover is dried and black layer in seed is visible. Crop biomass is turned into compost or mulch.

Soybean planting

  1. Using shade tolerant soy bean variety, such as Dena-1 and Dena 2. Seed requierment of 15 to 20 kg per ha.
  2. Seed is treated with Rhizobium sp inoculums (nodulin, rhizogin dll) for 10 g per 5 kg seed. Application by watering the seed to get wet and then dried followed by sprinkling tne innoculum on the seed and stirs them to get evenly mixed until it sticks on the seed. Direct sun shine is avoided for treated seed.
  3. Seed is planted between maize legowo rows with planting distance of 40 x 40 cm, and thus there are two rows of soy bean between every maize legowo row. Planting date can be at the same time as maize planting or seven to ten days after maize planting.
  4. Soy bean is harvested before the pod breaking, or when pod color is brown. It is recommended to harvest soy bean earlier than maize harvest. Crop biomass is used for compost
